CHAPTER 11

Stepping into the living room, Sterling shook his head. "What do you want, Duncan? You made it clear you didn't want our help. You should be home with your pack now."[G1]

Sterling's aloof tone usually provoked Duncan, but when Duncan stared blankly and offered nothing in return, Sterling knew something was wrong.[G2][G3]

“My mother told me to come. I don’t have anywhere else to go.” Duncan croaked. “My father disowned me for what I’ve become and what you did to me.”

“What I did? You were born preferring Wolves. I also didn’t alter you, Athena did. Your father was just in denial.” Sterling wouldn’t admit blame for Duncan’s pup when he had no choice himself.

"You know what I am talking about. Where is she? My daughter?" Duncan's voice cracked and Sterling's eyes softened.[G4]

“Come here. Sit down, please. Aveline, would you please get Duncan some water?”

Duncan sat. As Sterling sat beside him, he noticed the tremor in Duncan's hands. He grabbed them to stop their shaking as Aveline placed the glass on the coffee table and left them alone.[G5][G6]

“Your mother was always the smart one. She told you to come to me because your pack was going to reject you.”

“My father said I wasn’t part of the pack anymore because I whelped your pup.”

“Oh, Duncan shut up. Your father was looking for a reason to get rid of you. His arrogance prevented him from acknowledging facts; his first-born loved riding knots. He viewed your preference as his failure. Now you want to blame me for it? That’s typical.”

Sterling rose and faced Carter looking in from the kitchen.

“Your pup is safe. I will always keep her safe. She’s at the Infirmary. I don’t know what you expect me to do.” Sterling caught Carter’s disapproving expression.

“I don’t have a pack anymore. Please. Sterling.” Duncan’s voice broke.

"You're not part of my pack, and according to you and your asshole father, I'm nothing but a half-breed, unfit to be called Lycan and unfit to be an Alpha, so technically I don't have a pack, either!" Sterling enjoyed making Duncan grovel, and he planned on continuing it.[G7][G8]

“Sterling, my Alpha, may I please have a word with you?” Carter walked out onto the deck without looking back. “You can’t leave him.”

Sterling laughed, "Why the fuck not? You think he would give me a second thought if the roles were reversed? Damnit Carter, don't be naïve. I've dealt with Duncan's elitist family scorning me for decades, and now, well, this is fucking priceless."[G9]

“You’re a better person, act like it.” Carter scolded. “He’s swallowing his pride to ask for your help.”

Sterling didn’t appreciate his reprimand and tossed Carter against the side of the house, pressing hard against him, squeezing his face. Carter didn’t flinch. Sterling’s eyes flared in anger expecting his Omega become submissive, but he hadn’t mated an Omega. Carter’s eyes flashed gold just as he slipped his arm up and twisted away from Sterling’s grip.

“If you want to fight me, that’s fine, but your anger only proves I’m right… and you know it.
